Okay, so apparently 油条 are called Fritters in English.‎
"Fritter is a name applied to a wide variety of fried foods, usually consisting of a portion of batter or breading which has been filled with bits of meat, seafood, fruit, ..."

Personally, I'm wondering what the difference is between a fritter or 油条 and a doughnut or 油炸圈饼 = 甜甜圈.  Is it only a matter of shape?  If I take a fritter and curl it up so that it is now in the shape of a ring is it now a doughnut?
